Getting the Young Guys

Many times a conversation will be overheard that goes something like this: "I just don't understand why we don't get those younger guys in our chapter/chorus."

Some interesting information came my way the other day from a young Barbershopper who hosts a twitter account just for Barbershoppers. He said that as young, energetic people they want fun. They aren't looking for the drudgery of learning and re-learning music on a weekly basis. They want to learn it quickly and get on to making something musical out of it. They want excellence. They also want to make known to the world that singing is fun, and that singing and music will set your soul/spirit free.

So, how do we get them in the first place? Two words—SOCIAL MEDIA! If we want to get inside their world to start getting them into ours, we need to use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, any and all that they are using to communicate. We can have the very best Website or e-mail blasts, but if we aren't communicating in the way they are, we won't get them or keep them. That social media side of things is the most important way of piquing their interest. Many of us need to get off our couch and learn how to do some of this so we can interest them in making music with us.

It also takes a change in how we do our meetings and rehearsals. That, however, is a topic for another time.
